The first time I saw "Guarantee" on a Disney Cruise Line booking page, I had no idea what I was agreeing to.

You're picking a stateroom, scrolling through options, and suddenly you see things like "Guarantee," "Guaranteed Stateroom with Restrictions," and regular stateroom selection all mixed together. If you're new to cruising, or even if you've sailed before but never noticed this, it can be confusing.

👋 I've sailed Disney Cruise Line more than 10 times now. I'm Platinum in their Castaway Club loyalty program, and I've booked cruises where I obsessed over the exact stateroom location and cruises where I truly didn't care. I've seen both guarantee options work out great. I've also seen people pick the wrong one for their travel style and regret it.

Now I help families figure out which approach actually fits how they travel, and book the right option from the start.

The quick version

There are two different "guarantee" situations on Disney Cruise Line, and they work very differently.

Regular Guarantee (GTY) is what happens when you pick a specific stateroom category (like Deluxe Family Oceanview or Standard Inside) but you don't get to choose the actual stateroom number. Disney assigns it later. You're locked into that category or better (but I wouldn’t say to expect an upgrade). This isn't a discount. It’s about how the stateroom number is assigned, not a special promo.

Guaranteed Stateroom with Restrictions (IGT/OGT/VGT) is the discounted option. Here, you're picking a stateroom type (Inside, Oceanview, or Verandah), not a specific category. Disney picks your stateroom later, and the booking comes with strict rules: it's non-refundable, requires full payment upfront, and you can't make changes (including passenger names). But these can come with deep discounts - I’ve seen some verandah staterooms as high as 35% off.

The difference matters a lot depending on what kind of traveler you are.

What "Guarantee" (GTY) actually means

Sometimes when you're booking, you'll notice that a category you want doesn't let you click on specific stateroom numbers anymore. You can still book that category, but your confirmation will show "GTY" instead of an actual stateroom number like 6142 or 8510.

You're still choosing a specific category. So if you book a 7A (Deluxe Oceanview with Verandah), you'll get a 7A. You just won't know which exact stateroom until closer to sailing. Timing varies, sometimes well before sailing, sometimes close-in. But don’t stress, you’re confirmed in that category!

The important thing to understand: GTY isn't a “deal.” It's not cheaper than booking normally. It's just a regular reservation where your stateroom number comes later.

All the normal rules still usually apply. You can cancel within the standard penalty windows, make changes to your party and more. The only thing you're giving up is knowing exactly which stateroom you'll be in. As always, be sure to check all of the booking terms that are specific to what you’re about to reserve to ensure what applies to your booking.

What "Guaranteed Stateroom with Restrictions" means

This is where the savings come in, and where the trade-offs get real.

Disney sometimes releases special discounted rates. You'll see these labeled as Inside Guarantee with Restrictions (IGT), Oceanview Guarantee with Restrictions (OGT), or Verandah Guarantee with Restrictions (VGT). The discounts can be substantial.

But you're not just giving up your stateroom number. You're giving up control over the category entirely.

When you book VGT, for example, you're agreeing to any verandah stateroom on the ship. That could mean a spacious Deluxe Family Verandah. Or it could mean a basic verandah with a partially blocked view. Disney decides based on what's available when they finally assign your room.

Here's what you're agreeing to with restricted rates:

  • You pay everything upfront. No deposit now, balance later. The full cruise fare is due when you book.

  • It’s nonrefundable/nontransferable. Cancel for any reason and you forfeit the entire amount. There's no partial refund, no credit toward a future cruise. (Ahem, the importance of travel insurance.)

  • Nothing can change. You can't swap dates, add or remove people from your reservation, or modify your stateroom type.

  • Your stateroom comes later. Expect to find out your actual stateroom assignment anywhere from a couple weeks before sailing to just a few days out.

I sailed on the Disney Magic in May 2025 and chose to do a guarantee with restrictions stateroom. As a solo sailor on this trip, an inside guarantee with restrictions was the perfect way to get on board, even with the single occupancy price.

Why I chose an Inside Guarantee with Restrictions on my last cruise

Let me give you a real example from my own travels.

I sailed on the Disney Magic in May 2025: a solo trip where I knew I wouldn't be in the stateroom much. The whole point was the ship experience, the shows, the ports, pool days, and just getting away for a few days.

When I saw the IGT rate, it was significantly cheaper than booking a regular inside stateroom. This was especially true for me booking a single occupancy stateroom. I didn't care about deck location, whether I was near the elevators, or which configuration I got. I just wanted to be on a Disney ship (I’m sure you can relate!).

I knew the rules going in: this money is gone no matter what, Disney picks my room, and I can't change anything. I was fine with all of that.

That's the mindset you need if you book with restrictions. You're trading flexibility for price. If you're the type who likes certainty, or if there's any chance your plans might change, this isn't for you.

What kind of stateroom will I get assigned to?

This is where people get tripped up, and it's the distinction that matters most.

Regular GTY keeps you locked into the specific category you selected. Say you booked a Category 5A verandah on the Fantasy. Disney will assign you a 5A or potentially bump you to something nicer (again, don’t book counting on this upgrade gamble), but you're not going to wake up to a lower-tier stateroom. Your category is protected.

Restricted guarantees (IGT/OGT/VGT) work completely differently. You're choosing a stateroom type, not a category. Book Verandah Guarantee with Restrictions (aka VGT), and Disney can place you anywhere in the verandah universe: the spacious family rooms, the mid-tier standards, or the entry-level options that Disney notes "may have an obstructed view."

Three questions to ask yourself before booking

If you're not sure which option is right for you, think through these:

1. Do you care where your stateroom is located?

If you are prone to motion sickness and prefer a specific area, or you want to be near (or far from) the elevators, or you're sailing with a group and need connecting rooms, pick your room. Don't gamble on guarantee. Some folks I’ve worked with also prefer to be on specific decks for easier access to their favorite or most visited ship amenities.

2. Would losing the cruise fare hurt if you had to cancel?

With restricted guarantees, there's no refund from the point of booking. Not even when the sailing is several months away. That’s a key difference that I point out to folks, whereas if you had booked a regular fare (including Guarantee with no restrictions), you may be able to get a refund of some of your money.

3. Are you booking this cruise for the stateroom or for the experience?

If you're going to be out exploring ports, at the shows every night, and mostly using your stateroom for sleeping and showering, guarantee can be a smart way to save money. If the stateroom matters, like a family trip where the kids need space, or a special occasion where you want a verandah for morning coffee, pay to choose exactly what you want.

One note here, if you have Castaway Club status, it’s possible that your onboard activities booking window may have already opened by the time you book a guarantee with restrictions. If you’re sailing on a high-demand cruise, the activities you were hoping to book may have already been picked over.

Why is this? I often see guarantee with restrictions fares pop up closer to sail date. By then, some passengers’ onboard activities booking dates may already have opened.

My take for first-time cruisers

If this is your first Disney cruise, I'd think carefully before booking a restricted guarantee just to save money.

The savings can be real. But you're also adding uncertainty to an experience that's already new and unfamiliar. You won't know your stateroom until later. You can't change your plans if something comes up. And if you end up in a location you don't love, you might spend the trip wishing you'd paid a bit more for certainty.

That said, if you're truly flexible, comfortable with the restrictions, and the savings are significant? It can be a smart move. I've done it myself.

The key is going in with eyes open. Know what you're trading. Know what you're getting. And make the choice that actually fits how you travel.

FAQs

Can you get upgraded?

Disney's language for restricted rates mentions you'll be assigned a stateroom in your selected type "or higher." Technically, that means an upgrade is possible.

My advice: don't book a restricted guarantee because you're hoping to beat the system. If you get bumped up, that's a bonus. But plan for the floor, not the ceiling.

What about obstructed views?

Disney's terms for restricted guarantees specifically mention that your stateroom "may have an obstructed view." For Oceanview and Verandah Guarantee with Restrictions bookings (that’s OGT and VGT), this is a possibility you need to be okay with.

On verandah rooms, "obstructed" can mean a few different things. Some rooms have lifeboats partially blocking the view. Others have what's called a "whitewall" verandah—you still have private outdoor space, but there's a solid wall where you'd normally see the ocean through a railing.

Some people don't care. Others would be frustrated the entire cruise. Know which type you are before you book.

When do the restricted, discounted rates show up?

Restricted rates aren't available on every sailing. There is no set schedule, but based on my experience, Disney often releases them in the final couple months before departure. Popular itineraries and peak season sailings might never see these rates at all.

This is inherently a last-minute play. If you're someone who books a year out to lock in the perfect stateroom and the best price, restricted guarantees aren't really designed for you. But if you've got flexibility, both in your schedule and your expectations, they can be a smart way to sail for less.
